Community Service Hours

Please remember that helping in our community does not include working for a business. If you are volunteering at a business, doing work that another person would be paid to do this does not count as Community Involvement Hours towards your graduation. Please see the back of the Community Service form for examples of eligible activities.

Completed forms must be signed by the activity organizer as well as parent/guardian and can be dropped off to the Guidance Office. We encourage all students to keep a copy or take a picture of the form before handing it in for their records.

Minister’s Certificate of Recognition for Community Involvement

In May 2025, the Minister of Education announced a new Minister’s Certificate of Recognition for Community Involvement for students who complete 50 or more community involvement hours. These certificates will be awarded beginning with students graduating in the 2025–26 school year. Distinctions: Bronze: 50–99 hours; Silver: 100–199 hours; Gold: 200+ hours.

The graduation requirement for obtaining an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) remains 40 hours of community involvement. The new certificates will be ordered by school boards in the same manner as other certificates and will be provided to students upon graduation.

Course Changes

Course changes will be considered for the following reasons only:

Students who are in grades 9, 10, or 11 and have less than 8 courses
Students in grade 12 who do not have enough credits for graduation
Students who need a compulsory course to meet a graduation requirement
Students who failed courses and need to repeat them
Students who are missing a prerequisite course
Students who passed a Summer School course which still appears on their timetable
Students who did not follow through with a Summer School course and need to add the course to their timetable
Students who need a prerequisite course for an apprenticeship, college, or university program, or are changing their pathway plan

All course changes are based on availability. Course changes will not happen for elective courses. Requests to change teachers or lunches will not be accommodated. Requests to change classes to be with friends will not be accommodated. Please choose your courses carefully.

Students need to have earned 24 credits before they can request a study period. Consequently, students in Grades 9, 10 and 11 will take eight courses. Grade 12 students may have a study period, although a study period is only recommended for students who need to and will use the daily 75 minutes to work on their courses. As well, study periods are not recommended unless a student is on track for a minimum of 31 credits.
