Black History Month Weekly Announcements:
Week 1 (February 6th) - Serena Williams:
Hey Flames! As part of Black History Month, this week we’re highlighting Serena Williams, a Black tennis player whose impact helped shape history.
Serena Williams, born in 1981 and brought up in Compton, California, is one of the greatest athletes of all time and a powerful figure in Black history. She won 23 Grand Slam single titles, the most by any player in the Open Era, and dominated professional tennis for over two decades. Beyond her success on the court, Serena has used her platform to speak out about racial inequality, gender discrimination, and equal pay, especially for women in sports. She has been open about the challenges Black women face in healthcare and society, helping bring attention to issues that are often ignored. Serena Williams’ legacy goes beyond tennis as she continues to inspire change through her voice, resilience, and fight for equality.
