What Do These Course Codes Mean (1W, 1D, 1L, 1O)? Why Are There No Applied Courses? What Courses Do I Take To Keep College and University Pathways Open? What Is A Locally Developed Course?

Recently, the Ministry of Education made changes to the grade 9 curriculum for all Ontario students and schools.

  • The new Grade 9 English, Math, Science and Geography courses (ending in 1W) replace the previous academic and applied courses.
  • The new Grade 9 French course (ending in 1D) replaces the previous academic and applied courses.
  • Courses ending in 1W and 1D prepare students for apprenticeship, college, and university pathways.
  • Open level courses (ending in 1O) are for all students and all pathways.
  • Our Locally Developed courses should only be selected based on recommendation from the grade 8 teacher and prepare students for the workplace pathway only.  Locally Developed Courses are designed for students who are still working at an elementary level in a particular subject area (English, Math and Science only).
