Student Success Services

“Every student should have the same opportunity to succeed and graduate from high school.
We share a common goal – to help all students build a promising future for themselves”
Ontario Ministry of Education

How is the Ministry of Education modifying education to help our students be more successful?

The Ministry has created:

  • Specialist High Skills Majors: Bundles of 8-10 courses which allow students to focus their learning on a specific economic sector while achieving their high school diploma.
  • Co-operative education: A program which combines the classroom learning experience with experiential workplace learning. Students can learn up to two co-op credits towards their compulsory diploma, with no limit on earning optional co-op credits.
  • Dual Credit Programs: Students now can earn credits which will simultaneously count towards both their high school AND college diploma.
  • Orientation Programs: STA undertakes an extensive orientation program to ensure that our incoming Gr. 8 students know we are excited about their arrival, and that we will do everything possible to make their transition comfortable! We want them to “feel at home” prior to their first day of classes!
  • Student Engagement: The Ministry has mandated a “Student Voice” program in each of Ontario’s schools – offering students a vehicle to voice their opinion about a range of topics, including school safety, and ways of enhancing their lives in the community.

What is a “Student Success program” all about?

“Student Success” programs were initiated by Ontario’s Ministry of Education as a strategy to help all students graduate. The Ministry’s goal (stated in 2005) is to achieve an 85% graduation rate – by helping students in grades 7 to 12 tailor their education to their individual strengths, goals and interests. Struggling students will benefit from individualized attention, extra support, and guidance in terms of solving problems they previously had to face alone.

Who is part of STA’s Student Success Team?

Principals, Vice-Principals, Guidance Counsellors, Special Education teachers, and other referring teachers meet on a regular basis to review students’ progress within the program.

How is a student referred to the school’s Student Success program?

  • - Recommended by their Gr. 8 teacher
  • - Recommended by the Guidance Counsellor or Student Success Team
  • - Request by parent
  • - Achieving at Level 1 or below
  • - Attendance concerns
  • - Behavioural, Emotional, or Social concerns

Numeracy Programs

At STA we offer evening math classes for all grade 9 and 10 students each semester.  This programme will be known as the ‘After Hours Math’.  It is a more structured approach to offering review of concepts, and time to work on homework and assignments for students. The topics covered will reflect and reinforce each student’s current math curriculum.  This program also helps prepare students for the EQAO Ministry tests.  Information letters and registration forms are sent home at the end of September and February.  See our school website for more details.

Literacy Programs

STA also offers evening Literacy classes for all grade 9 and 10 students each semester.  This class is designed to develop the oral communication, reading, writing, and media literacy skills that students need for success in their secondary school and daily life.  This class is also an excellent way to prepare our grade 10’s for the OSSLT.  Information letters and registration forms are sent home at the end of September and February.  See our school website for more details.

What STA Students are saying:

….“The Student Success Room is a place that I can go to get help”

….“Student Success has helped me a lot.  I feel better knowing there is a quiet place where I can work and get the help I need”

….“I can’t sit in a classroom for 75 minutes all the time, so I need a place where I can go so I don’t disrupt the rest of the class and get in trouble”

….“I know I can always get help when I go there”

On behalf of the STA staff, we wish all our students and families the finest successes our Catholic community has to offer!
